Curious about the Critical Writing program at Recess? Join us for a virtual information session to learn more.
Critical Writing at Recess returns for the 2026–2027 program year with a newly reworked cohort model, expanding opportunities for writers to publish new work, collaborate with peers, and engage artists and editors in sustained dialogue.
During this session, Recess Co-Director Ladi’Sasha Jones will share an overview of the program, discuss the philosophy behind the new structure, and walk through the open call process.
Participants will also have the opportunity to ask questions about the program, application process, and expectations for the year-long cohort.
Critical Writing at Recess is a practice-led program for writers engaging contemporary art and culture. Each year, a cohort of three writers gathers through reading rooms, artist conversations, and editorial exchanges while developing new texts and contributing to a shared critical discourse.
Throughout the program, each writer will:
• publish two original texts
• collaborate to produce a digital reader of contemporary art writing
• participate in monthly conversations with artists, editors, and cultural workers
The program runs August 2026 through June 2027 and includes gatherings held both virtually and in person.
The Critical Writing Open Call closes on April 30, 2026.
This session is a great opportunity to learn more about the program and determine whether it may be a good fit for your writing practice.
