Dancing While Caged
DJ set with Stefan Ruiz
Dancing While Caged 12:30-3PM
Join members of the Dancing Through Prison Walls community for a conversation around the experience of dancing inside prison while incarcerated; whether individually, socially, in a classroom, or as a choreographer. Joining the conversation will be three people who are now free and dancing on the outside, and, who between them, have spent 53 years imprisoned in California state prisons.
Live DJ set with Stefan Ruiz 4-5PM
Dancing Through Prison Walls is a California-based dance and performance project whose mission is to dance with, choreograph with, and tell stories within embodied carceral landscapes and beyond, amplifying voices of incarcerated folks, and addressing mass incarceration. They will be Session artists at Recess in Summer 2025.
Stefan Ruiz studied painting and sculpture at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the Accademia di Belle Arti, Venice, before turning to photography. In addition, he has taught art at San Quentin State Prison and was the creative director for Colors magazine from 2003 to 2004.
